What is Activation?

Activation is the moment a new user first experiences your product’s real value.

How does activation work?

Every product has a moment when value clicks: the first message sent, the first report generated, the first ride booked. Define that moment, measure how many new users reach it, and shorten the path to it.

Why does activation matter?

Signups are promises. Activation is delivery. Users who never hit the value moment churn quietly, and no ad budget can buy that back. Activation sits early in the pirate metrics funnel for a reason: it decides whether everything downstream exists.

Where did activation come from?

Dave McClure’s 2007 framework defined activation as a great first visit. Growth teams later sharpened it into the ‘aha moment,’ made famous by Facebook’s rule of getting new users to 7 friends in 10 days.

How do you improve activation well?

Instrument the first session. Find what your retained users did early, then rebuild onboarding so everyone gets there faster. Cut every step that isn’t the value moment.

Bottom line: activation turns a signup into a user. Find your aha moment and pave the road to it.
